The Deutschvilla 2008

The Deutschvilla is a listed former residential building in the municipality of Strobl in the Austrian state of Salzburg . It is used as a cultural center by the “Deutschvilla - Association for the Promotion of Current Art” cultural initiative . The villa bears the name of the previous owner family Deutsch.

history

The Viennese entrepreneur George Schinteliffe-Blakey bought the property in Strobl not far from Lake Wolfgang in 1896 , which he had built with an initially one-story house around 1906.

Summer residence of the Deutsch family

In the first half of the 1920s, the Viennese banker Otto Deutsch and his wife Maria bought the building, and in 1923/24 they had it extended and remodeled according to their ideas. The plans were made by the Prague architect Viktor Kafka in the style of a Tuscan villa. The work in Strobl was directed by a master builder from Bad Ischl . On the ground floor there was the entrance, a hall with paneled walls and a wooden ceiling, the master's room , the dining room and the veranda facing east , which was later closed. The bedrooms and bathrooms were located on the upper floor, and further rooms in the converted attic, e.g. for staff accommodation. The kitchen and utility rooms were located in the basement. The owners had the spacious plot of land designed by Hans Kern from Salzburg based on the model of English landscape parks . The Deutsch family used the villa for their summer retreat .

During the time of National Socialism and the occupation years

During the time of National Socialism in Austria , the villa was confiscated in 1938 and used as the home of the Association of German Girls . In 1942 the German Jewish family was formally expropriated. After the end of World War II , Strobl belonged to the US zone of occupation during the occupation by Allied forces. The American military set up an officers' mess with a bar and a café in the villa , which it operated until the end of the occupation in 1955. In 1948, the estate was again the German family transferred Service.

University pension and vacancy

Until the sale of the villa and property to the Strobl community in 1988, the Deutschvilla was owned by the “Friends of the University of Vienna Summer School” from 1958, which housed the participating professors and students during its summer university in Strobl.

After the sale to the community, the future of the villa was initially unclear. The building was empty. It was only used by a local non-profit organization as a bazaar for second-hand goods and threatened to deteriorate. At times the community considered demolition. She had acquired the property primarily to build a retirement home on the property. The Deutschvilla was also there , stated Mayor Josef Weikinger ( ÖVP ). The retirement home was built on the property in 1990.

New use

From 1997 new usage concepts for the Deutschvilla were developed. This year the roof was renewed and maintenance work was carried out inside. Since 1999 exhibitions have been shown in the Deutschvilla. The association "Deutschvilla - Association for the Promotion of Current Art" was officially founded in April 2000. In the same year the building was placed under a preservation order. In the following year, the Strobl community leased the villa to the “Deutschvilla - Association for the Promotion of Current Art”. The history of the house was researched and the forgotten architect of the house was identified. The cultural department of the State of Salzburg organized an artist symposium in the Deutschvilla in 2002 with international participation. Between 2004 and 2007 the villa was extensively renovated. The paintings and the wall covering of the entrance were also reconstructed.

Curator from spring 1998 to autumn 2008 was Veronika Hitzl from St. Wolfgang, curator from autumn 2008 to spring 2013 was Paul Jaeg from Gosau, curator from spring 2013 is Ferdinand Götz from Bad Ischl. In 2008, the exhibition un.SICHTBAR.Widständiges in the Salzkammergut , part of the Upper Austrian State Exhibition Salzkammergut , dealt with the resistance against National Socialism in the region.
