The Gmunden Ceramic Weeks are a series of events in the field of modern ceramics , pottery and ceramic art , which have been taking place annually in Gmunden since 1989 , building on the ceramic tradition of the city of Gmunden and with the so-called Gmunden pottery market as the core event.

history

Gmunden has a long tradition as a location for the manufacture of art and utility ceramics in Austria. The "Hafnerhaus am Graben" (from which the Gmundner Ceramics Manufactory, which is still active today ), was first mentioned in a document as early as 1492 . In addition, from 1920 there was also a production facility of the "Original Gmundner Tonwarenfabrik" (later: Österreichische Sanitär-Keramik und Porzellan-Industrie AG, ÖSPAG , today the company Laufen Austria AG ), which manufactured Laufen sanitary ceramics until 1990 in its branch in Gmundner . The company Laufen Austria AG also contributes to the ceramic radion in Gmunden by founding and supporting the Klo & So sanitary museum in the Gmundner Kammerhof.

From the beginning of the 20th century to the Second World War and beyond, there was a close connection between artists and ceramic design, initially in the context of Gmundner ceramics and later around the artistic ceramics workshop of the Schleiß family (owners of Gmundner ceramics 1843–1931). Many artists of the Wiener Werkstätte , such as Dagobert Peche , Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel , Franz von Zülow , Paul Hartmann, Michael Powolny , Matthäus Fellinger or Herta Bucher (as well as others, such as the Munich designer Tommi Parzinger ) taught at what was then Gmundner teaching workshop for ceramics ( 1913–1931) or designed designs for tiled stoves and vessels.

In 1963, the ceramic artist Kurt Ohnsorg founded the Gmunden Ceramic Symposium (at that time mainly in cooperation with the ÖSPAG workshops in Gmunden-Engelhof), which initially took place until 1978 and once again expressed Gmunden as a place of connection between ceramics and art.

Building on these traditions, the Ceramic Weeks were launched in 1989 under the name Töpfermarkt Gmunden as an initiative of the City of Gmunden (especially City Councilor Christine Zemann ) to position the city in the cultural and tourism scene in the Salzkammergut . The focus was on a pottery market, which was not designed as a pure craft market, but followed an overall artistic concept from the beginning. This concept was also co-designed and promoted by the ceramics department at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz (especially by Günter Praschak and Maria Baumgartner, who were teaching there at the time ).

In 2003 the Gmunden Ceramic Weeks were artistically strengthened by the revival of the Gmunden Ceramic Symposium .

Gmunden pottery market

The Gmunden pottery market began in 1989 as a relatively open and initially regional event. However, since 1992 it has included an invitation to ceramists from all over Europe to apply for participation, with subsequent selection from the applications by a jury . Since then, ceramic prizes have also been advertised for the participants and also awarded by jury decision. Since 1994, a special European host country or an international thematic focus has been determined every year and ceramists from this country or with this focus are invited to participate.

"Akzente" art program

At the Gmunden Ceramics Weeks , the pottery market was and will be supplemented from the start by an accompanying artistic program ( Akzente ) (on the initiative of the ceramics department at the Linz Art University ). Exhibitions of modern ceramics by various ceramic artists are held here at various exhibition locations and galleries in and around Gmunden , and the respective host country is also presented in one of these art exhibitions with important representatives of ceramic art. For this accompanying program, the central events and exhibitions were curated and organized by the ceramics department at the Art University Linz, and supplemented by initiatives from a growing number of galleries and locations in Gmunden.

Through this artistic exhibition program of the Ceramic Weeks Gmunden, a cross-section of Austrian and international ceramic work of modern ceramics that is remarkable across Europe has been offered over the course of time (see the table overview below).

Ceramic Symposium Gmunden

In 2003 the Gmunden Ceramics Symposium was revived by Kurt Ohnsorg (1963–1969) and has since taken place as an artist gathering every two to three years during the Gmunden Ceramic Weeks . However, this component extends beyond the Gmunden Ceramic Weeks , as the results will be presented as a traveling exhibition throughout Europe up to the date of the following symposium. International dimension

The Gmunden Ceramic Weeks are an important part of the European ceramic scene. This was also taken into account when other “ceramic cities” such as Faenza (Italy), Aubagne (France), Bunzlau (Poland), Argentona (Spain) joined Gmunden in 2012 on a joint EU project ARGINET (ARTISTIC "ARGILLA" (CLAY ) ACTIONS FOR a EU CERAMIC NETWORK) and have been coordinating content since then and also organizing a Europe-wide exhibition and exchange program.

Ceramics in the Kammerhof museums in Gmunden

The so-called Kammerhof in Gmunden is now home to the K-Hof Museum and the Kammerhof Gallery, which also focus on various aspects of ceramics.

As early as 1450, today's Kammerhof building was built as the administrative seat of the Prince's Salt Office. In 1870 the municipality of Gmunden acquired the property after the “Salzoberamt” in Gmunden was converted into the “kk Salinen- und Forstdirektion” by decree of Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1850 and was given its official seat in the official building on Klosterplatz. After changing uses of the building, the newly furnished showrooms of the Gmundner Museum were opened in the Kammerhof building in 1949. In 2008 the K-Hof was renovated and reopened as a museum house (K-Hof Kammerhof Museen Gmunden).

Objects from the Schleiß family's ceramics workshop and from the ceramic symposia in Gmunden under the direction of Kurt Ohnsorg (1963–1969) are exhibited in a permanent exhibition entitled “Ceramics and Art” . In addition, historical sanitary ware is shown in the museum section "Klo & So". In the Kammerhofgalerie on the top floor of the building, changing art exhibitions are offered, with the focus on ceramic art during the ceramic weeks and the pottery market.
