Matthäus Fellinger

Matthäus Fellinger (born June 11, 1924 in Neukirchen an der Vöckla ; † May 12, 2002 in Linz ) was an Austrian painter , ceramist and draftsman .

The artist had been deaf from the age of 16 as a result of meningitis . He completed his ceramist apprenticeship in Gmunden and was trained as a ceramic painter from 1941 to 1944 .

Franz von Zülow and Ernst Huber encouraged him to study at the Vienna University of Applied Arts with Walter Müller-Hoffmann and Eduard Bäumer (1946 to 1952). He then studied from 1952 to 1954 at the art school of the city of Linz with Wolfgang von Wersin and Herbert Dimmel .

In the 1950s, his ceramic studio was located in a former horse stable in the listed Gerstlhaus in Schenkenfelden . The rooms are now used as a prayer room and are part of a social project for the deaf and deaf-blind. The artist later lived and worked in Linz in the Auberg an der Riesenwiese district. He created numerous painterly and ceramic works, initially as free-hand pottery, later in ceramics, sgraffito, but also in stone and wood, furthermore pottery and watercolor painting. He received numerous commissions for art in architecture.

He was a member of the Mühlviertler Künstlergilde , the Innviertler Künstlergilde , the Upper Austrian Art Association (since 1956), the Professional Association of Fine Artists of Upper Austria (since 1946) and the Künstlerhaus Wien .

Linz-St. Magdalena - fountain basin by Matthäus Fellinger
  • Hexagonal fountain basin in Linz at the confluence of Mannheimer Strasse and Johann Wilhelm Klein Strasse (1970). The outer wall has twelve mosaics with motifs from the water world. The well is no longer in use as such, but is planted.
  • Two-part mosaic made of painted tiles on the house Gürtelstraße 8 in Linz (1956)
  • Ceramic picture on a block of flats in Kirchfeld, Windischgarsten with a historical documentation of the housing stock on the market square of Windischgarsten (was broken down into 500 individual parts because thermal insulation was applied to the house)
  • Ceramic work at the Römerfeld secondary school in Windischgarsten
