Wolfgang von Wersin

Wolfgang von Wersin (born December 3, 1882 in Prague , † June 13, 1976 in Bad Ischl ) was a German architect and designer .

Life

After studying painting in Prague between 1900 and 1901, he moved to Munich, where he completed a degree in architecture in 1904. While studying architecture, he also studied painting from 1902 to 1905 at the teaching and experimental studio for applied and free art in Munich, where he worked as a teacher from 1906 after his military service. He met his wife Herthe (1888–1971) at school. She worked as a draftsman and also illustrated one of his books.

From 1912 he worked for the Deutsche Werkstätten . He dealt with exhibition architecture and provided designs for furniture, fabrics, wallpaper and ceramics.

The design of a dinner service for the Munich magistrate, which was manufactured in 1928 by the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory , made him known and so in 1929 he took over the management of the department for commercial art at the Bavarian National Museum in Munich; his dismissal in September 1933 was for political reasons.

In addition to his work as a museum director, from 1932 he designed the Adonis , Helios and Lotos table service forms for Nymphenburg .

From 1936 to 1938 he designed the Helena dinner service for Rosenthal and the Ariadne service for the Thomas porcelain factory in Marktredwitz (taken over by Rosenthal in 1908) . In 1946 he took part in the founding of the Upper Austrian Werkbund , of which he was president until his death. He taught at the art school of the city of Linz , and in 1956 he published his book vom Rectangle, in which he dealt with the application of the various rectangular shapes in architecture and design. He distinguished between square , hemidiagon, trion, quadriagon, biauron, penton, diagon, bipenton, hemiolion, auron, sixton and double square.
