The Grünberg is 984  m above sea level. A. high mountain of the flysch zone southeast of Gmunden in Upper Austria . It is clearly dominated by the summit of the rugged Traunstein ( 1691  m ), only 3 km away .

Since 1957, a two-cable gondola based on the Wallmannsberger system has led to the summit of the Grünberg . The Grünberg cable car was built by the VÖEST company and later rebuilt several times. In autumn 2010 it closed its operations. Before that, there had been a cable car accident on October 16, 2004, which left two seriously injured. In May 2013, the construction of a new large cabin aerial tramway began; it opened on June 14, 2014. In the section between the valley station and the first pillar, the passenger has a clear view of the city of Gmunden.

Until 2014, a drag lift was available for ski guests on Grünberg . However, as part of the redevelopment of the Grünberg recreation area, this was converted to use the summer toboggan run and can no longer be used by skiers. A descent to Gmunden is possible, depending on the snow conditions. Hiking trails lead from the mountain station to the Laudachsee and on to the Traunstein .

Next to the Grünbergalm restaurant there is a bronze sculpture in the shape of a donkey loaded with two sacks. This goes back to the time when there was no cable car to the Grünberg. The innkeeper of the Grünberghütte (today Gasthof Grünbergalm), Karl Danner, owned a donkey named Agi in the 1950s, who regularly made the unaccompanied journey from Grünberg to the weekly market in the town of Gmunden in order to bring food and drinks up to the mountain for the hut visitors transport. In two large baskets on the donkey's back was a shopping list and some money. The donkey always went to the same dealers and they filled the baskets according to the list. Then the donkey made its way back to the Grünberg.

In the summer of 2018, the Treetop Walk Salzkammergut with a 39 meter high observation tower was opened on the Grünberg . In 2019 the tower was supplemented by a 75 m long tunnel slide.
