Characteristic

  • Hilly country with main valleys running parallel to the edge of the Alps.
  • High proportion of forest on slopes, on knolls and in valleys, mostly in the form of large closed forest areas, predominantly spruce forests . Forests closer to nature are rare, rather in steeper slope areas. Clear-cutting management in the large forest areas and increasingly near-natural forest management with a higher proportion of hardwood.
  • The close intermeshing of forest and open country shapes the landscape. There is a strong tendency to abandon the use of grassland with subsequent reforestation.
  • Dense system of deeply cut side streams ("Flysch trenches"), mostly close to nature in smaller streams. Streams arise in the upper slope areas. Local bank protection in the valleys at larger streams near the settlement. Trees accompanying the banks are mostly present and also shape the landscape.
  • Rural, very structured cultural landscape, predominantly single courtyards, often also on hilltops. Predominantly grassland, arable farming is only important in the northern parts.
  • Rich in cultural landscape elements ( hedges along property lines, orchards around the farmsteads , rows of fruit trees, larch willows). High proportion of lean and fat flower meadows and pastures, especially on steep slopes. In some places Bürstling lawns and lime lean lawns, dry locations only on steep, sunny areas.
  • Often there are nutrient-rich swamps and pipe grass meadows .
  • Only a few smaller towns, the economy is poorly developed.
