Leo Wollner (Designer)

Leo Wollner (born July 29, 1925 in Vienna ; † February 20, 1995 there ) was an Austrian textile designer .

Live and act

Leo Wollner received his technical training from 1939 to 1942 at the Federal Training and Research Institute for the Textile Industry in Vienna. From 1942 he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts Vienna with Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill (Department of Fashion Textiles). At the end of his studies, Leo Wollner received the Prize of the University of Applied Arts in 1949 . Since 1947 he has been a freelancer in the Vienna Artists Workshop Association under the direction of Professor Josef Hoffmann .

From 1950 Leo Wollner worked as a freelance designer together with his wife Gretl, who was also a student of Prof. Wimmer-Wisgrill.

Together they received numerous prizes and awards:

  • 1951: IX. Triennial Milan: silver medal
  • 1953: Int. Carpet Competition Detroit USA: 1st and 2nd prize
  • 1953: Wall Covering American Institute of Decorators: 2 honorable mentions
  • 1954: Xth Milan Triennial: Gold medal
  • 1957: XI. Triennial Milan: Prize of the textile competition

In 1957 Leo Wollner was appointed to the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , where he took over the management of the textile department. In the decades of its activity, the department gained international renown, most recently with the introduction of a diploma for the "Textile Design" course in 1977.

Leo Wollner and Gretl Wollner worked with numerous architects on the textile and color design of theaters, hotels, public and private buildings:

1958 Festspielhaus Salzburg - entire textile design (stage curtains, chair covers, wall coverings, carpets, etc.) with architect Clemens Holzmeister .

In 1959 Leo Wollner received the City of Vienna Prize for Fine Arts in the Applied Arts category.

Another important aspect of the work of Leo and Gretl Wollner was their work as a textile designer with well-known German and international manufacturers such as B. PAUSA AG / Mössingen or KNOLL international . It was u. a. Prof. Leo Wollner developed a new printing technique that allowed for new large repeat prints. In 1971 he received the Knoll International USA award for his “Sling” curtain fabric .

The artistic works were exhibited in further solo exhibitions in Amsterdam, Linz, Munich, Stuttgart, Rotterdam and Vienna.

From 1980 to 1994 numerous exhibitions took place in the Wollner Showroom 1010 Vienna, Grünangergasse 1.

Leo Wollner died unexpectedly in 1995, he was buried at the Hietzingen cemetery.

Gretl Wollner died in 2006.

Among the well-known students of Leo Wollner is u. a. his successor at the chair for textile design at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart Karl Höing .
