Zacherlfabrik
The Zacherlfabrik is an orientalizing building in the 19th district of Döbling , Nusswaldgasse 14.
history
Johann Zacherl traded in pyrethrum insect powder from Tbilisi from 1842 . In 1870 he began producing his moth powder "Zacherl's Insecten killing tincture" ("Zacherlin") in Unterdöbling . In his factory in 1873 he was already producing 600 tons of insect powder with four workers. To sell the powder, he set up stores in Paris , Constantinople , Amsterdam , London , New York and Philadelphia . In 1880 Zacherl handed the company over to his son Johann Evangelist. The factory for the production of the insect powder was rebuilt between 1888 and 1892. The street-side administration wing of the industrial building built by Karl Mayreder according to the design by Hugo von Wiedenfeld is one of the rare examples of a commercially motivated orientalizing historicism in European architecture , similar to the Yenidze cigarette factory in Dresden . The Wienerberger Ziegelfabrik produced the ceramic tiles used to clad the facade and the roof dome.
In addition to the production of insect powder, Johann Evangelist Zacherl opened up the cleaning, repair and storage of furs and carpets. From 1903 to 1905 he had a town shop ( Zacherlhaus ) built on Wildpretmarkt (in the first district ) . After the First World War, sales of insect powder fell due to high tariffs and the boom in the chemical industry. After the death of his father in 1936, Gregor Zacherl took over the factory, in which he also had ski bindings made from 1933. In 1949 Gregor Zacherl put his trade license back and died in 1954. The company itself was deleted from the register in 1958.
present
After the factory building in a large garden had stood empty for decades, Veronika and Peter Zacherl opened the Zacherlfabrik for art projects in 2006 in cooperation with the Jesuit Art Fund. Until the summer of 2013, exhibitions and music evenings were held every year during the summer months. No events have taken place since the end of 2013 due to official requirements that the owners could not meet. In 2019 the Zacherlfabrik was used for performances as part of the Impulstanz dance festival.
