The Albertinapassage is an underground pedestrian passage opened on July 30, 1964 and gradually closed from 2005 at the intersection of Opernring / Operngasse in Vienna , 1st district, right next to the State Opera . A few steps into town through Operngasse you reached the graphic collection and the Albertina art museum . A dinner club was located in the former passage with around 1,500 square meters of floor space until August 2019. At the end of December, a new club called "O - the Club" will open in the premises on the Ring.

history

After the successful and popular Opernpassage (1955), the City of Vienna built several more inner-city pedestrian underpasses in the area of Vienna's Ringstrasse , which were equipped with shops and escalators . The Albertinapassage was located directly next to the Opernpassage, but in contrast to this it had no access to the Karlsplatz subway junction .

The building, which cost around 24 million schillings and was designed by Adolf Hoch , opened in 1964 as the fifth pedestrian underpass on the Ring . The main reason for the construction was peak values of up to 6,000 pedestrians who passed this intersection every hour. The name "Albertina-Passage" took place on April 11, 1963 in the municipal council committee for culture.

As a special feature, the public toilet facility in the Albertinapassage had two bathing cabins, a feature that only very few public lavatories in Vienna had.

In the case of passages that were not connected to the subway, which had been running since the early 1980s, problems arose over time. Passers-by tried again and again to cross the streets above ground, the shops complained about a lack of customer frequency. This also applied to the Albertina passage.

The city administration decided in 2005 at the latest to open the passage. The escalators were gradually dismantled, the glazed exit pavilions removed and most of the exits closed. The operations in the passage were relocated. For pedestrians, protective paths with pedestrian traffic lights and zebra crossings have been created again at the same level .

present

In 2009 a new use for the Albertinapassage was sought. The contract was awarded to Matthias Kamp, who had the Babenbergerpassage redesigned into a club disco in 2003 . As there, the Viennese architecture firm Söhne & Partner was commissioned with the redesign.

The conversion of the Albertinpassage into a "Dinner Club" was completed in December 2011 and the bar opened.
