The Babenbergerpassage is a former pedestrian underpass under the Vienna Ringstrasse in the 1st district of Vienna . It is located on the Burgring , in the area between Babenbergerstrasse and Eschenbachgasse . Today it is a night club.

history

Due to the success of the Opernpassage built in 1955, additional underpasses were built in the 1960s to enable pedestrians to cross the Ringstrasse safely. On July 14, 1961, two more underpasses designed by Adolf Hoch , the Bellariapassage and the Babenbergerpassage, were opened by Mayor Franz Jonas .

In the following decades the importance of the passage declined several times. The ring road was declared a one-way for private traffic in 1972. After the opening of the U2 subway line in 1980, some of the passages were connected to the subway and thus used intensively, while others, including the Babenbergerpassage, did not consider this to be sensible. The frequency of the passage was reduced considerably when, in connection with the construction of the U3 underground line, which was opened in 1993, under Mariahilfer Strasse towards the end of the 1980s, the terminus of tram lines 52 and 58, which had been located here, were relocated. It became less and less clear to pedestrians why they should cross the streets underground here. The city of Vienna ultimately decided to close the passage; it remained unclear for a long time whether it should be filled in or the underground space should be used for other purposes.

Finally, in 2002 the 1,500 m² area was leased to sunshine enterprises musikproduktionsgmbh for 700 euros a month, who received an investment subsidy of 254,000 euros. The Babenbergerpassage was converted into a club disco by the Viennese architects Söhne & Partner . The opening took place on October 23, 2003. The investment volume should have amounted to one million euros.
