Kenneth Lee O'Neil Baugh (born February 24, 1941 in Montego Bay , Saint James - † September 1, 2019 ) was a Jamaican politician of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). He was Minister of Health from 1980 to 1989 and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jamaica from September 2007 to January 2012.

Life

After completing school at Springfield Primary School and Cornwall College , he studied medicine at the University of the West Indies and completed this course with a doctorate as a Medical Doctor (MD). He then worked as a surgeon .

His political career began in 1980 when he was elected to the House of Representatives as a candidate for the Jamaica Labor Party . There he represented the constituency of Nort West St. James until 1987 . Immediately after the election, Prime Minister Edward Seaga appointed him Minister of Health in his cabinet on November 1, 1980. He held this office until the end of Seaga's tenure on February 13, 1989. Between 1989 and 1993 he was a member of the Senate at the suggestion of opposition leader Seaga.

Following the JLP's victory in the September 3, 2007 elections, Prime Minister Bruce Golding made him Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. In addition, he is also Deputy Prime Minister (Deputy Prime Minister) and in this position represented Prime Minister Golding on a visit to the United States before the United Nations , but also to promote the settlement of foreign investors in Jamaica. He was a minister until January 6, 2012. He was able to defend his parliamentary seat when the JLP was defeated on December 29, 2011 and was appointed opposition health spokesman on January 19, 2012 by opposition leader Andrew Holness .
