En Hod ( Hebrew עֵין הוֹד, translit. ‛Eyn hōd; therefore often written as Ein Hod ) is an artists' village in northern Israel , 15 kilometers south of Haifa on the slopes of the Carmel Mountains . As of 2018, En Hod has 304 inhabitants.

history

The Janco Dada Museum

The village was founded on the site of the Arab village of Ein Howd , whose residents were expelled when the State of Israel was founded in 1948. Most of the villagers who fled (between 650 and 950) settled in Jenin . A few had stayed, settled near their former village and founded the new Ein Howd there, which was only recognized as a community by the Israeli state in 1992. This village was also home to the (fictitious) Palestinian family in the novel slept While the world of Susan Abulhawa plays the main role.

En Hod became an artist colony in 1953 on the initiative of the Dadaist Marcel Janco . Of the families living in the village today, at least one family member is an artist. In addition to various galleries and studios, the village runs the “Janco Dada Museum” with a focus on Dadaism.

In 2010 the museum had to be evacuated due to the severe forest fires in the Carmel Mountains , in which some houses in the town went up in flames.

meaning

The great artistic and cultural significance of En Hod is also expressed in the fact that ten of its residents have so far been awarded the Israel Prize : Zahara Schatz (1955), Marcel Janco himself (1967), Gertrud Kraus (1968), Simon Halkin ( 1975), Haim Hefer (1983), Natan Zach (1995), Aryeh Navon (1996), Michael Gross (2000), Gavri Banai (2000), Gila Almagor (2004).
