Susan Abulhawa (born June 23, 1970 in Kuwait ) is a Palestinian - American author and human rights activist.

Life

Susan Abulhawa was born in Kuwait to a Palestinian couple from the At-Tur neighborhood in east Jerusalem who separated soon after their birth. She herself was first sent to her uncle in the USA, with whom she lived until she was five. She then came to live with various relatives in Kuwait and Jordan . At the age of ten she was taken to Jerusalem , where she was placed in an orphanage. At the age of 13 she was placed in Charlotte, North Carolina as a foster child.

Abulhawa has lived in the United States since then and completed a college degree in biology. She made further studies in human medicine and obtained a master's degree in neurology . In later years she turned to journalism as well as writing short stories and novels. A trip to Palestine in 2000 made her a political activist because of her experiences and observations. She has since fought for the Palestinian cause through publications, interviews and television appearances.

The non-governmental organization (NGO) Playgrounds for Palestine , founded by Abulhawa, collects donations for the purchase of land, the construction and maintenance of playgrounds in the Palestinian territories and refugee camps. So far 20 places have been completed.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign was co-founded by Abulhawa. The organization is trying to organize a boycott of goods and food produced by Israeli companies or in illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank .

Susan Abulhawa now lives with her daughter in Yardley, Pennsylvania .
