The building called Trutzburg at Bergstrasse 5 is one of the oldest buildings in Schleiden 's Gemünd district . As part of the Counter-Reformation in 1619, many citizens of Gemünd felt compelled to leave the fortified Gemünd and settle on the northern side of the Urft . The reason for this was provided by Count Ernst von der Marck and Schleiden, who ruled from 1612 to 1654. He demanded that Lutherans celebrate all Catholic holidays, attend Catholic mass, introduce ear confessions, absolution, Latin chants, and the use of the sign of the cross. They had no choice but to leave the area of the strictly Catholic rule of Dreiborn . The area of the Jülich district of Heimbach offered itself as an alternative. The Jülich office in Heimbach tolerated the Protestants, who now increasingly settled on the right-hand side of the Urft.

The fortress is a manor and was built for the wealthy new citizen Rheinhard Dietrich Günther and his wife Elsgen Jonen. At the top of the archway you can see the initials, house brand and year. The name Trutzburg comes from a local legend, according to which the owner wanted to defend himself against the baron on the other side of the river with a weapon threat.

So the Urft not only formed a separation of domains, but was also a limit to how religions were tolerated. From around 1351 to around 1800 the left side of the Urft belonged together with Malsbenden, Gemünd, and Mauel to the Dreiborn rule, the other to the more liberal Heimbach office.

One of the many later owners, Peter Schlagloth, built a brick villa in the neo-Renaissance style (1895) as Bergstraße 15 and the 17 as a half-timbered villa in the Swiss country house style (1901); In both cases the builder was Eduard Schön.
