The Øye stave church (Norwegian: Øye stavkirke ) is a in the 1950s reconstructed Norwegian stave church , in the municipality of Vang , about 60 kilometers northwest of the pass in Fagernes , connects the eastern and western Norway.

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1327 on the occasion of the elevation of tithe by the apostolic nuncio . A carved portal of this church was dated to the second half of the 12th century . Since the church was built on the shores of Lake Vangsmjøse and had to survive many floods, it suffered rot and was demolished in 1747. A large part of the structural elements, a total of 156 parts, were stowed under the floor of a new church. A craftsman accidentally discovered these remains in 1935. The stave church was then reconstructed between 1955 and 1957, and unused material from the restoration of Heddal stave church in 1850 was used. The church was finally consecrated in 1965.
