The Hedalen Stave Church (or Hedal Stave Church , Norwegian Hedalen stavkirke ) is a Norwegian stave church in the Hedal side valley of Sør-Aurdal in Valdres in Fylke Innlandet .

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1327, but it is probably older and therefore the oldest church in Valdres. The church was heavily rebuilt in 1699 and lost its original shape as a simple long church with a rectangular nave, narrower choir and apse with a flanking arcade. During the renovation work, the original choir was replaced by a new choir in block construction . A transept was built and the nave was extended to the east. The church was restored around 1900. Medieval buildings are now only a significant part of the ship structure and the arcade.

Architecture and equipment

The church has a richly carved west portal with leaf tendrils and animal motifs and an iron-studded door leaf. Most of the furnishings come from the time after the Reformation. There are few medieval objects, such as a reliquary with dragon heads on the gables and scene carvings from the life of Jesus Christ and the murder of Thomas Beckett . The furnishings include a Romanesque soapstone baptismal font and a model church from the 13th century.
