The Reinli Stave Church ( Norwegian stavkirke Reinli ) is a Norwegian stave church , which is about 30 kilometers southeast of Fagernes in Valdres is.

history

It was first mentioned in a document in 1237, but can be dated to the second half of the 13th century. Archaeological research has shown that it was built on an older Christian burial site. The church is believed to be a successor to a church that was destroyed in a fire.

In the Middle Ages the church was expanded with an apse and an arcade. The church was rebuilt several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. Restoration work from 1880 and 1970 created the current shape, but most of the medieval building fabric has been preserved.

architecture

The church is twice as long as it is wide and has probably had a small roof turret since it was built . In contrast to other stave churches, the roof was built with transverse parts and a ceiling was added later. The church has a west and a south portal, which consist of half-pillars with pilasters . The door leaf of the west portal has iron fittings from the Middle Ages.
