The Stadium of Friendship is a multi-purpose stadium in Görlitz . In the stadium both find football games and athletic events and school sports instead. It is in municipal ownership. The stadium has a grass pitch in the middle, which is surrounded by a cinder track. In the east, west and north rise the former grandstand slopes, which can no longer be used as spectator seats today.

location

The stadium is located on the vineyard in the north of the Görlitz district of Weinhübel between Inselweg and Zittauer Straße. To the east of the stadium is the Volksbad - a former outdoor pool on the Lusatian Neisse . To the west, Zittauer Straße runs down the vineyard. From the foot of the vineyard, the street Am Wasserwerk leads to the stadium from the south. The Zittau road runs also the tram , which has two stops in the immediate vicinity of the stadium.

To the south of the stadium there is another hard and grass soccer field as well as the archery facilities.

history

Between 1942 and February 1945, a marine vocational school was located at the later construction site of the stadium. The school was housed in barracks and also had its own bunker. The barracks were used as quarantine and resettlement camps after the end of the Second World War .

The stadium was built by volunteers between the early 1950s and inaugurated on November 13, 1951. In the following years, the stadium facilities were expanded.

The sanitary facilities and changing rooms were rebuilt after reunification. However, the grandstands, the discus ring and the pole vault had to be demolished. The renovation of the stadium has been the goal of city policy and numerous sports clubs for several years, but implementation has always failed due to the city's budgetary situation or a lack of funding. Among other things, a tartan covering for the arenas and the restoration of the spectator stands were planned.

use

During the GDR era, the children's and youth spartakiads , as well as athletics competitions and football games, took place here. In 1956 the 5th stage of the International Peace Tour ended in the Stadium of Friendship. The cyclist Täve Schur won the stage here on May 7th.

Today, various football and athletics clubs use the stadium as a training location. Schools and kindergartens also use the sports field for outdoor sports lessons and a wide variety of sports competitions.
