The city archive of the former imperial city of Überlingen and now the second largest city in the Lake Constance district has been in the old city chancellery since 1913 . In the immediate vicinity of the more than 400-year-old Renaissance building, which was last renovated in 2000, there is also a modern, air-conditioned warehouse with mobile shelving.

History and tasks

The main task of the city archive is to store and index all legally relevant documents of the city administration.

Walter Liehner has been the head of the city archives since 1987. In addition to his everyday tasks in the archive, he regularly offers expert tours on selected topics in the archive and on walks through the city and publishes essays on the city's history.

In the archive, some user spaces are offered for registered trade visitors.

Stocks

The collections focus on Überlingen, Lake Constance, Swabia and Switzerland.

The archive is legally obliged to keep records of the city administration. The archive also accepts valuable documents on the city's history from private individuals, associations and local companies.

The archive has a papal bull from the year 1417 and the Überlinger crest letter from 1528, that of Charles V was awarded.

The 16-volume Reutlinger Chronik , which was created by the Überlingen mayor and hospital master Jakob Reutlinger (1545–1611) and contains many valuable details about the history of Überlingen, is a special feature of the collection .
