Christian Wilhelm Steinauer

Christian Wilhelm Steinauer (born September 4, 1741 in Leipzig , † December 31, 1826 in Naumburg ) was a Leipzig merchant and a senior employee of the Meissen porcelain factory .

Life

His grandfather was Johann Christian Steinauer , who donated the “Stone Album” in Großjena in 1722 . He himself was the son of the Leipzig merchant Johann Christian Steinauer (1707–1786). Steinauer was a successful businessman. Even Goethe had placed orders with Steinauer. From 1780 he was chief controller in the Meißner porcelain factory. Since August 28, 1795 Steinauer was active as 3rd commissioner. He held this position until his retirement in 1814. Steinauer was not only contractor of Goethe and Friedrich Justin Bertuch in Weimar , but he was also friends with them, as can be seen from their letters. On November 14th, 1805 Steinauer received the citizenship of the city of Naumburg .

Steinauer was also friends with Corona Schröter . It is possible that Christoph Martin Wieland got to know her through Steinauer. When Corona Schröter moved from Leipzig to Weimar in 1776, Steinauer was at least involved. Goethe's letters to Steinauer indicate a certain familiarity. He also made designs. So Steinauer z. B. the title page of Wieland's Singspiel Alceste , which was premiered in Weimar in 1773.
