The Eisenach city archive is the archive of the city of Eisenach ; it keeps documents from 1493 to the present day. The Eisenach city archive is one of the larger Thuringian city archives and stores, among other things, the important economic archive of the Eisenach automobile plant (AWE), which existed from 1945 to 1991 .

history

The city archive is located in the north wing of the city palace on the market

There is only sparse information about the Eisenach city archive from older times. However, a city archive already existed in the Middle Ages. It was located in a fireproof vault in the southeastern part of the old town hall in front of the Georgenkirche , which was expanded in 1484 and demolished in 1743 . There are no records of the time this archive was set up or its order.

In the Stadtweinkeller, today's town hall , on the other hand, which the town council had to set up as an official building when Duke Johann Ernst took advantage of the old town hall as a princely chancellery when he moved his residence to Eisenach in 1596, there is evidence of a letter chamber in 1622, but a fire-proof archival vault undetectable. That is the reason why, in the great city fire of 1636, the documents stored in the town hall, including the library, were almost completely destroyed. In the 17th century, the archive was finally given a fire-proof vault in the rebuilt town hall.

Fortunately, the most valuable archive materials were moved to the Reutervilla in Eisenach in good time when the town hall complex, in which the archive was located, was badly hit by an aerial mine on February 9, 1945 . In order to save the other archive materials that had been affected by the destruction, they were temporarily housed in the main post office and in Karlstrasse 4 in May 1946 and moved to the rear building of the palace in July 1949 . The archive is still located here today. As a result of the war, the loss of not only many files, but also the collection of seals and seals, most of the library, almost all pictures and many years of the Eisenach daily newspapers is to be deplored.

Archivists

In the course of its existence, the archive has mostly lacked professional support and was only brought into order from time to time. First and foremost, the town clerk came into consideration. The lack of appreciation for the archival material reflects the poor statement about the Eisenach city archive in the "Guide to Thuringia's Historical Archives" (Gotha, 1900). The old files were lying on the town hall floor, disorganized and half rotten.

Only after the First World War did Erich Keil begin reorganizing the neglected holdings. He was followed in 1925 by the Eisenach local history researcher Hugo Peter, after his death until 1937 and from 1943 to 1945 by the teacher Hermann Kühn and from 1937 to 1942 Ulrich Nicolai. While the administrators of the city archives had previously only been active on a part-time basis, on August 1, 1952, Hans Eberhard Matthes was employed as the first full-time city archivist. He held office until his death in 1981. From 1991 the historian Reinhold Brunner was a full-time city archivist until he was appointed head of the newly formed Office for Education in 2014 . Christopher Launert was his successor as head of the city archives.

Jurisdiction

The Eisenach city archive is the archive of the city administration. It stores written documents (e.g. certificates, official books, files, maps and plans, seals , stamps, etc.) that have been created in the administration of the city of Eisenach since the 17th century, and regularly takes over documents from ongoing business operations. In addition, the city archive collects other documents that reflect the past and present of the city of Eisenach (e.g. pamphlets, newspapers, posters, pictures, leaflets, films and the like). The Eisenach City Archives have already taken over archives from other sources in the past (from companies, associations, political parties or personal papers). The archives of the villages that were incorporated into Eisenach between 1994 and 1998 are also kept.
