Citizen role (also citizens protocol , civil recording book , libri civium , burbok or Bürgerbuch ) is the name given to a people directory in which the part of the urban population was listed, the civil rights were granted. The term toboggan is used synonymously in southwest German and Swiss language to this day .

history

Citizens' roles have been carried out in cities since the development of citizenship : from the Middle Ages , with the development of the class society and the bourgeoisie as the third class , up to the end of the early modern period in civil society . With the end of the rules of the estates , their meaning ceased to exist.

In the citizen role, the data of the new citizen were recorded, in particular with regard to the acquisition of civil rights. This included, for example, the time at which the citizenship letter was issued or the citizenship oath was taken, the amount of the citizenship money paid and the origin of the new citizen.

The requirements for citizenship varied according to city and time. They could consist of real estate , a minimum wealth , proof of income , the masterful exercise of a craft and / or a reputation . Most of the time, real estate was indispensable for the application and firmly linked to the status of the citizen . With the inclusion in the list was someone who previously only residents (also Inwohner , Beiwohner , sojourner , medewohner or non-positus ) had been the city for citizens (also burgaere or civis ). The role of the citizen thus contained a privileged portion of the urban population, who had a decisive influence on the urban structure.

Today, citizen roles or citizen books serve to honor deserving citizens of the city in some cities (comparable to honorary citizenship ). In addition, collections of local regulations that serve as a source of information for the population of a city are sometimes referred to as citizen books.

Bürgergeld

With acceptance into the role of a citizen, there was often an obligation to pay a citizen's allowance. The amount of the citizens' money to be paid was sometimes determined by the assets of the new citizen. If the new citizen wanted to become a citizen by marrying a citizen's daughter or widow, the citizen allowance could also be reduced. Certain people, such as public officials in larger cities, could be exempted from acquiring civil rights.

Citizen status

Certain privileges were associated with the status of a citizen , such as the right to exercise a trade or the right to vote , but also certain obligations , such as paying taxes or defending the city.
