history

The construction of the city library in Jülich began in 1927. The city library received its first building in July 1939 next to the youth hostel at the time. Most of the books were bombed on November 16, 1944. The library was reopened in 1945 with 450 volumes. The stock grew rapidly, and so the biggest problem in the following decades was the spatial accommodation, which required new moves again and again. A decisive change in the development of the city library brought about the technical management by a qualified librarian in 1971. From 1971 to 1975, media lending increased from 53,921 to 112,582.

The city library achieved a further increase in performance after 1979, when it was declared a central library by decree of the NRW Minister of Education and was included in the relevant funding plan. With the move to the Kulturhaus am Hexenturm in 1992, the city library was given its own space again for the first time after the Second World War. With an audience area of 700 m², the previously permanent space constraint could be alleviated and the planned concept of a cultural meeting point in the city center could be tackled.

The Förderverein Stadtbücherei Jülich eV was founded in 1983 , which has been supporting the interests of the Stadtbücherei Jülich with ideas, personnel and finances since then.

As early as 1996, the library was one of the first German libraries to be represented on the Internet. At the end of 2004 this was integrated into the website of the city of Jülich. The city library has had its own website with an integrated online catalog since August 2013.
