description

With the construction of the new town, the town fortifications were built in the middle of the 14th century. On the southeast, northeast and southwest sides, the city walls were doubled by a curtain wall . In the north-eastern part the fortifications of the medieval castle, the predecessor of today's castle , protected the city. Trenches were dug on the eastern part and ponds connected to each other were created on the other sides , creating a complete water fortress.

Two gates were built in the southern corner and the Little Gate was built in the north . The city gates were rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century . The Upper Gate was given its present form in 1629, with its battlements being removed and the mansard roof added in 1814 .

The city wall was repaired in 1611 and 1629 and a uniform height of 10.5 meters was created. Since the 17th century, houses were added to the inside of the city wall and the moat was built. The drawbridges were replaced by stone bridges in the early 17th century.
