Location of the Okres Jihlava

Okres Jihlava ( Jihlava District) is located in the central area of ​​the Českomoravská vrchovina Mountains in the Vysočina in the Czech Republic .

The watershed between the Black Sea and the North Sea runs through the district . Of 1,180 km² (2003), 59% are agriculturally usable areas, 31% are forests.

Most of the agricultural area is used as fodder pasture. In the industry, the mechanical engineering , food, wood processing and textile industries predominate . The unemployment rate is 6.9% and is thus below the national average.

In addition to car tourism, bicycle tours and agritourism, the district offers good summer and winter sports in the areas of Čeřínka and Jihlavské vrchy. There is also a wide range of architectural and natural monuments, museums and art collections.

  • The historical center of Jihlava is a city monument with 200 protected buildings. The market square is one of the largest historical squares in Europe . The urban catacombs , which were created by connecting cellars, are worth visiting . The city wall was also preserved.
  • In Polná there is the Decandom Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary , which is one of the most valuable baroque churches in the Czech Republic .
  • In the town of Brtnice there are two baroque bridges with statues of saints.
  • In Třešť , nativity scene building celebrates its two hundred year old tradition.
  • The old town of Telč was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992 . The historic market square with arcades and market fountain, the Renaissance castle , two observation towers and a monastery is unique .

On January 1, 2007, the communities Brtnička , Hrutov and Kněžice from the Okres Třebíč were added. Meziříčko moved to the Okres Žďár nad Sázavou .
