geography

Zhoř is located in the Arnolecké hory on the Chmelský creek, which rises southeast of the place. The Moravian village is one kilometer south of the historical border with Bohemia . To the north of the village is the Velký Ochoz forest. The Na Vrchu (617 m) rises to the east, the Kopaniny (602 m) and the Skalek (626 m) to the south.

Neighboring towns are Záborná and Janovice in the north, Milov and Stáj in the northeast, Chroustov and Arnolec in the east, Jersín in the southeast, Nadějov in the south, Rybné and Jamné in the southwest, Měšín and Ždírec in the west and Lipina and Dobroutov in the northwest.

history

The village was probably created in the course of the colonization of the Moravian border forests by the Třebíč monastery in the second half of the 13th century as a slash and burn. The Waldhufendorf with church and parish originally belonged to the monastic estates, but was later passed on to secular owners as a man's arm. Not far from the church there was a small fortress, which developed into a noble residence and to which the upper part of the village belonged. The lower village remained with the monastery. The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1339, when the owner of the fortress, Otto Graf von Magdeburg, claimed and received the church patronage. In 1390 the owner of the fortress, Susanne von Malý Zhoř, litigated with the Měřín provost about the Pustina farm. In return for a payment of six shock pieces of silver, she waived all claims against Pustina. In 1399 Susanne von Malý Zhoř involuntarily ceded the church patronage to the Měřín Provostry. Under Rambold XIII. from Collalto , Zhoř was attached to the Černá dominion and later formed part of the family entourage of Count Collalto.

After the abolition of patrimonial Zhoř formed a political municipality in the Jihlava district from 1850 . From 1949 the community belonged to the Okres Jihlava-okolí and since 1961 again to the Okres Jihlava. There is a sports airfield north of the village. The Zhoř racecourse is located in the eastern outskirts.
