City fortification Waidhofen an der Thaya
The city fortification Waidhofen an der Thaya delimited the medieval, planned castle town of Waidhofen an der Thaya in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria at a defensive altitude on a terrain spur sloping steeply to the south and east to the river Thaya .
history
Around 1522 a repair and restoration was mentioned. After 1792, the city moat began to be filled in and garden plots were created to the south and north. Three city gates were demolished in the 19th century.
description
The elongated triangular system corresponding to the terrain spur initially had a grassy place. Eastern Spitz was secured by the former castle and today's baroque palace and opposite the western city wall by the parish church of Waidhofen an der Thaya with an originally defensive churchyard.
The city wall is largely preserved. The upstream kennel is partly still recognizable.
There are numerous escape cellars under the old town.
