The Roman Catholic parish church Waidhofen an der Thaya is located in Waidhofen an der Thaya in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district in Lower Austria . The church stands between Kirchenplatz and Pfarrplatz at the highest point of a former medieval castle town.

history

The year 1131 is mentioned for the original church still as part of the city fortifications. Under Dean Johann Ernst von Jamaigne , the master mason Mathias Fölser built the east tower between 1713 and 1715, the new building began in 1716 and the previous Gothic church was demolished in 1721. In 1723 the mighty high baroque hall church was consecrated. In 1890 a stucco work was carried out by Franz Slanetz. On the south side, a Marienkapelle was added to the choir in 1719 , on the north side a sacristy and an oratory on two floors.

Furnishing

The ceiling paintings with the theme of the Nativity of Mary from 1764 are by Johann Lorenz Daysinger. The marbled high altar with mighty architecture filling the end of the choir is from 1721. The altarpieces Apostle at the grave of Mary and Assumption of Mary in 1721 are by Mathias Mölk, the statues by Friedrich Wilhelm Still. Four side altars were erected by 1728.

The organ is the largest organ in the Waldviertel, it has a baroque front, was built by Casparides in 1729, and has three manuals, a pedal, a sill and 36 stops. The organ was restored in 2007 by the Austrian organ builder Bodem and equipped with an electronic game and stop mechanism (setter system).
