The city port of Dubrovnik is a facility from the 15th century and is located directly on the city wall of Dubrovnik on the southern Croatian coast of the Adriatic . The city harbor is a part of the old town of Dubrovnik .

The city of Dubrovnik has a total of three ports, which were designed with one another and should not be confused: apart from the city port, it is the commercial port in the Gruž district in the northeast, where large cruise ships are moored, and the ACI Marina, which is only a short distance away Mouth of the river Rijeka dubrovačka lying.

history

The current appearance of the port was designed and redesigned in the 15th century by the Croatian builder Paskoje Miličević . From the old town, which is surrounded by a city wall, the port can be reached through the Ponte gate (built in 1476) or the fish market gate (built in 1381). In addition to the Sveti Ivan fortress , which was built specifically to defend the port in the 14th century , the fortress Revelin , built outside the city wall by the builder Antun Ferramolino , was also supposed to protect the port .

The Kaše breakwater

At night the port was closed by a chain that was attached to the Sv. Luka as far as the fortress Sveti Ivan (also fortress of St. John). From the sea, the port was additionally protected by the breakwater "Kaše" (built in 1485) and a breakwater also constructed as a breakwater (built in 1873), which is called "Porporela" in Dubrovnik; Both stopped the enemy ships coming from the sea, which could then be shot at from the two fortresses Revelin and above all Sveti Ivan.

The most striking architectural element of the port facility are three large arches on the small promenade from the 12th century, expanded in the 15th century. The fourth of the original four arches was later bricked up again. In the past, the facility called the Arsenal also served as a shipyard where the galleys needed to defend the city were built and repaired; To this day, smaller ships are repaired here, and the facility also serves as a popular city café.
