The City Canal ( Latvian Pilsētas kanāls ) is a canal in the Latvian capital Riga .

Design and history

The city canal emerged from the 90-meter-wide moat of the Riga city fortifications , which ran around Riga on the east side. It was given its present appearance from 1857 onwards. The canal was intended to transport goods and serve as a reservoir for fire fighting water. Even at this time, however, it was intended to be used as a recreation area. This function characterizes the system today.

In the run-up to the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the city of Riga, renovation of the city canal was initiated, which took place in two phases. The trench was also deepened to two meters and its border renewed. The second phase was completed in June 2002. From 2009 motorized shipping was allowed on the canal, which enables the water to be used for tourism.

It is 3.2 kilometers long and runs from the right bank of the Daugava to the north of the old town and then leads through parks that were created on the site of the historic fortifications. In the northern part the canal leads through the Schützengarten ( Kronvalda Park ), then through the Basteiberg park until it finally joins the Düna south of the old town. The city canal is spanned by 16 bridges, including the Timmbrücke .
