The institution is supported by the city of Meissen and opened in 1901. Its tasks are cultural and homeland preservation including historical research. It is housed in the neo-Gothic house, the cloister and the former church of St. Peter and Paul of the Franciscan monastery on Heinrichsplatz in the old town of Meissen .
