The Wadern City Museum has been providing insights into the cultural history of the city of Wadern since 1978 and was reopened in 2013 after a completely new concept and redesign. It has been located in the historic "Öttinger Schlösschen" since it was founded.

The "Öttinger Schlösschen" is a five-axis, two-storey baroque palace, which was built in 1758 for Princess Christiane, the wife of Count Joseph Anton von Öttingen-Sötern-Hohenbaldern. After it had been used as a restaurant and pharmacy, it was used as a local museum from 1978. After a renovation from 2011 to 2013, the city museum was reopened in October 2013.
Museum history
The museum was established in 1978 as the first local museum in the district . The honorary director Willy Weinen has collected a large number of exhibits on regional and national history over the decades. After he died in 2009, the city decided to preserve and modernize the museum as a central glimpse into local cultural history. It was renovated for two years from 2011 and reopened on October 2, 2013. The museum has been managed by the cultural scientist Christina Pluschke since 2012.

Exhibits
During his time, Willy Weinen collected a wide range of exhibits on regional and national history. Nowadays, however, due to their large number, these are mostly temporarily stored in depots, but can be found online in the museum database digiCULT . The most interesting pieces, however, are exhibited permanently and for special exhibitions they can use these stocks as well as personal loans. The background of these pieces is researched on the one hand by the State Monuments Office or cooperating universities, such as Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , and, especially in the case of historically more recent exhibits, transmitted through oral tradition. The exhibits are supplemented by 3D reconstructions, listening stations, media presentations of historical views as well as short films and image sequences on various topics.
Permanent exhibition
The permanent exhibition is divided into several spatially separated areas. First of all, the Celtic-Roman history from the 5th century onwards is dealt with through representative grave finds and a timeline, while the second themed room is dedicated to medieval and early modern conditions and, in addition to archaeological finds, also has a film station. Next, the 18th century will be dealt with, as the then Count Josef Anton von Oettingen-Sötern made significant changes to the city of Wadern, for example in 1765 when it was granted market rights . The fourth themed room shows the history and works of Octavie de Lasalle von Louisenthal from the 19th century, who is revered as the “painter countess”. Finally, recent history is dealt with through the representation of bourgeois and noble family trees and the appreciation of six Wadern citizens who fought against the National Socialist rule . In addition to the special exhibitions, there is also a media and event room on the second floor.
Special exhibitions
In addition to the permanent exhibition, a special exhibition dealing with a specific topic is regularly set up. Topics were, for example, the First World War in the region, the archaeological excavations near Löstertal, the history of the district or the German-French friendship . The latest special exhibition deals with the regional “changing children's worlds” and began on December 2, 2017. The exhibits in the exhibits come partly from Willy Weinen's temporarily stored collections, but also from private lenders.
Association of the Wadern City Museum
On April 18, 2013 the "Friends of the City Museum Wadern eV" was founded. He is committed to the preservation of the cultural memory in the city museum and supports its work organizationally and financially.
