Stadtwerk Winterthur is a network company of the city of Winterthur in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland , which is active in the field of supply and disposal. It employs around 390 people and generated sales of CHF 242.66 million in 2019.
Field of activity
Stadtwerk Winterthur supplies the city of Winterthur with water , electricity , gas and district heating . It operates a waste incineration plant , a wastewater treatment plant , its own fiber optic network and the city of Winterthur's public lighting. Stadtwerk Winterthur also offers services in the areas of energy contracting and building services .
electricity
As an electricity supplier, Stadtwerk Winterthur supplies over 110,000 people from Winterthur and more than 4,000 companies and organizations with electricity. This is largely obtained from a major supplier. Around 20 percent of the electricity supplied is produced in the company's own waste incineration facility. Natural electricity has also been obtained from the Winterthur Taggenberg wind farm since 2002 .
Customers from Winterthur decide for themselves which type of production the electricity that is fed into the grid for them comes from.
water
Stadtwerk Winterthur supplies the city of Winterthur, nine neighboring communities and the group water supply to the suburbs and Glattal with drinking water . Overall, the company in 2019 sold through their approximately 420-kilometer network around 12 million cubic meters of water since mid-2019 only from the groundwater flow of Töss comes and does not require any treatment or additives. The first central water supply was put into operation in 1873.
gas
Stadtwerk Winterthur supplies its customers in Winterthur and a neighboring community with gas for heating, cooking or driving a car via its 220-kilometer network. In industry it is used as process energy. In 2019, 460 kWh of gas were distributed in Winterthur. This is obtained entirely from the Erdgas Ostschweiz AG network , in which Stadtwerk Winterthur holds a 4.2% stake. At least 20% biogas is added to the gas that is sold as fuel at two filling stations in Winterthur.
Wastewater treatment
The wastewater of the city of Winterthur and the surrounding communities flows together in the over 325 km long sewer network, is cleaned in the ARA Winterthur-Hard by Stadtwerk Winterthur and fed back into the Töss. Around 55,000 m³ of water are cleaned in the ARA every day.
Waste recycling
Municipal waste from Winterthur and numerous communities in the canton of Zurich is recycled in Stadtwerk Winterthur's waste incineration plant. Recoverability is guaranteed for these customers. The remaining capacity is covered with liberalized waste disposal. The KVA with its two incineration lines has an annual capacity of 198,000 t of waste. The energy generated by the combustion process is used as electricity, district heating and district steam. The replaced furnace line 1 and the fourth flue gas cleaning stage for both lines went into operation in 2012. The city of Winterthur is a shareholder of Zürcher Abfallverwertungs AG (ZAV AG).
District heating supply
The waste heat from the waste incineration plant is used for the environmentally friendly district heating supply. Around 15 percent of Winterthur's heating requirements are covered in this way. The district heating network is constantly being expanded.
Telecom
The city of Winterthur has been connected to an almost nationwide fiber optic network since the end of 2017 . Stadtwerk Winterthur offers individual solutions for private and business customers. Thanks to the open fiber optic network, people from Winterthur can choose from multimedia services from various service providers.
Public lighting
On behalf of the City of Winterthur, Stadtwerk Winterthur operates and maintains over 11,000 lighting points in Winterthur. More and more LED lights are in use. In addition to high energy efficiency, LED technology has the advantage that the lights, provided they are radio-controlled, can also be remotely controlled and dimmed.
Energy contracting
With the energy contracting service, Stadtwerk Winterthur plans, finances, builds and operates energy systems according to customer needs. Stadtwerk Winterthur's energy contracting is on a growth path.
House technic
Stadtwerk Winterthur's building technology mainly carries out repairs, maintenance work and installations in the electrical and gas sectors. In addition to this work, smaller planning orders are also being processed and oil heating systems converted to natural gas. Stadtwerk Winterthur's building services department also has an on-call service. The establishment of the building services department initially encountered resistance in the building services industry in Winterthur, as Stadtwerk Winterthur, as a public company, now also worked in the private market. This resistance subsided after a short time, however, as the fear of private entrepreneurs of preferring the public sector due to the services of the building services department disappeared.
