Stalin, friend, comrade

Stalin, friend, comrade is a political song that is considered a classic example of the Stalinist personality cult in music.

The song was written in 1938 in the Soviet Union under the title Song of Stalin ( Песня о Сталине ). The lively music of the song comes from Matwei Blanter (1903–1990), the Russian text by Alexei Surkow (1899–1983).

The German text by Alexander Ott (pseudonym of Georg Schmidt ; 1908–1978), written in the GDR in 1949 , emphasizes the freedom, “happiness” and “prosperity” of the people living under Josef Stalin that existed under Josef Stalin . The term “ freedom ” in particular is used several times (“happy, lively, freedom has come from free work”, the Soviet Union appears as the “homeland of freedom”, “where man creates on the free earth”). The refrain of the song "that sings of the great friend of mankind" reads:

Stalin led us to happiness and peace -

As steadfast as the sun's flight.
Long life is still yours,

Stalin, friend, comrade, faithful and wise!

The song was published by Ernst Busch on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the Soviet dictator ( Songs of the USSR. Songs about Stalin , Berlin (Lied der Zeit) 1949, pp. 86-88). Eterna's record was made in 1951. After the de-Stalinization , the song was no longer officially played.

A new edition followed after the fall of the Wall by the German Historical Museum on the CD The party is always right .
