Sophie Elisabeth of Brandenburg

Sophie Elisabeth von Brandenburg (born February 1, 1616 in Moritzburg (Halle) ; † March 16, 1650 in Altenburg Castle ) was a princess of Brandenburg and by marriage Duchess of Saxony-Altenburg .

Life

Sophie Elisabeth was the only child of Margrave Christian Wilhelm von Brandenburg (1587–1665) from his first marriage to Dorothea (1596–1643), daughter of Duke Heinrich Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . The princess was born in Moritzburg Castle in Halle , where her father resided as administrator of the Magdeburg Archbishopric .

She married Duke Friedrich Wilhelm II of Saxony-Altenburg (1603–1669) in Altenburg on September 18, 1638 . The marriage, described as happy, remained childless. The Duchess contributed financially to the construction of the cemetery church in Altenburg.

Sophie Elisabeth is buried in the princely crypt of the Altenburg Brethren Church.
