Johann Sebastian midnight

Johann Sebastian Mitternacht (born March 30, 1613 in Hardisleben , † July 25, 1679 in Zeitz ) was a German theologian, rhetorician, pedagogue, playwright and baroque poet .

Life

As the son of a Protestant pastor, Midnight was raised in his parents' house until he was 17 and then attended the Naumburg city ​​school. After graduating from high school in 1633, he enrolled as a theologian in Jena and on July 9, 1634 in Wittenberg , where he obtained his master's degree in philosophy on April 5, 1636 under August Buchner . He earned a living with private lessons until he received his first pastorate in Teutleben in 1638 .

In 1642 he was appointed principal of his former school in Naumburg. In 1646 he was appointed rector of the famous Rutheneum high school in Gera , and here he was able to devote himself to the school drama. He wrote no fewer than 15 dramas that had a significant influence on Christian way .

In addition, he wrote theological pamphlets, rhetorical and educational textbooks. From 1654 he was a member of the German-minded cooperative under the nickname "The Pleasing One" . In 1667 he was appointed court preacher to Duke Moritz von Sachsen-Zeitz . Shortly before his death in 1679, he was crowned Poeta laureatus . Some of his sacred songs were published in the Gothaer Gesangbuch, which was later published several times.
