IMO standard idioms

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IMO standard phrases ( English IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases ) (IMO SMCP) are standardized phrases for the Maritime , published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

In international shipping, communication in English must be precise, simple and unambiguous. For this reason, a standardized language has been developed that includes all safety-relevant expressions. The IMO standard idioms should be preferred and used as often as possible.

The International Convention on Standards for the Training, Certification and Watchkeeping of Seafarers requires understanding and use of the IMO standard idioms for officers on ships of 500 GT and over. According to the Ship Safety Ordinance, a bound edition is one of the nautical publications to be carried.
