interim storage facility at the Isar nuclear power plant

For the interim storage of used, spent fuel elements from nuclear power plants, interim storage facilities - so-called on- site interim storage facilities - have been or are currently being built at each location of one or more nuclear power plants . The fuel assemblies are stored there until the federal government, under its responsibility under the Atomic Energy Act, has put a repository for heat-generating waste into operation. The central interim storage facilities in Gorleben and Ahaus are preferably used for the interim storage of waste to be taken back from reprocessing abroad.

On-site interim storage facilities are used to postpone the transportation of spent fuel elements.
