Clifford Hugh Douglas
Clifford Hugh Douglas (born January 20, 1879 in Stockport , † September 29, 1952 in Fearnan , Scotland ) was a Scottish engineer who developed the economic concept of social credit .
Life
After Douglas his degree in mathematics at the University of Cambridge had been completed, he worked in various companies and industries as an engineer. His work took him to leading positions in North and South America and India .
His experiences during the First World War in the aircraft factory of Farnborough made him suspect that the value of production exceeded the sum of disbursed as salaries and dividends income.
Douglas checked the characteristics of more than a hundred large UK companies and found that all but those close to bankruptcy had incomes paid out less than production values. Douglas published these observations and the conclusions drawn from them in the English Review under the title "The Delusion of Super Production". As a result, he expanded the thoughts outlined there into the concept of social credit .
The anti-Semitic protocols of the Elders of Zion had a major influence on Douglas theories . Building on this, he understood the existing monetary system as part of a " Jewish world conspiracy ". Even after the "protocols" were exposed as falsified, Douglas stated that they "reflected the facts of daily life".
In the 1920s and 1930s Douglas turned increasingly to economic policy. He has been appointed adviser to several parliamentary committees in Canada and the UK . On extensive travels he presented his theories in various countries, including in front of members of the US Senate and the Norwegian King Håkon . During this time Douglas published other books on his theories.
Building on Douglas' ideas of social credit, a social movement emerged that led to the establishment of several political parties , including the Social Credit Party of Canada and the Social Credit Party in New Zealand .
