The Arcachon funicular ( French Funiculaire d'Arcachon ) was a funicular in the southwestern French city of Arcachon . It connected the lower town with the upper town with a height difference of 25 meters and ended in front of the entrance to the casino. This Moorish casino , built in the neo-Moorish style in 1863, was the center of the so-called Ville d'hiver , the winter city, which consisted of villas belonging to the affluent, predominantly Bordeaux population. The entire complex on the wooded dune had been acquired and operated by the Chemins de fer du Midi railway company in anticipation of great tourist interest since the mid-1850s . Since 1992, the Parc Mauresque has been an arboretum around the former casino, which was the landmark of Arcachon for a long time, was closed in 1974 and burned down in January 1977.

The funicular was put into operation in 1913 - two years after the company was founded and two years after the seven-kilometer-long tram line Tramway de Arcachon began - and ran until 1948, i.e. 35 years, while the tram was only used for local public transport for 29 years. The double-track line was 35 meters long and ran at an angle of 100 percent gradient . It served the better connection of the upper town, which otherwise could only be reached via stairs or long curved avenues. The fare in the first few years was FF 0.10 for a single journey, FF 0.15 for a return trip in 2nd class and FF 0.20 and FF 0.25 in 1st class.

In May 1950, the railway was replaced at the same location by an elevator system that is still in operation today.
