Opened on March 24, 1928 , the Stanley Theater in Journal Square in Jersey City was one of the largest theaters in the United States . The theater was designed by Fred Wesley Wentworth , and the 4,300-seat main hall, modeled on a street in Venice , was particularly popular with the population. It was used as a concert hall in the 1960s and has performed here including the Grateful Dead , Janis Joplin and Tony Bennett .

The Stanley Theater closed in 1978 and began to deteriorate before being bought and restored in 1983 for $ 800,000 by the Jehovah's Witness Religious Community and has since been used as the Jehovah's Witnesses Convention Hall.
