from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Starland Vocal Band was an American pop band . She was best known for her song Afternoon Delight from 1976 .

Career

Among the members of the group was the couple Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert , who initially appeared as a duo under the name Fat City (later: Bill and Taffy ). Together, the two wrote the pieces I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado and Take Me Home, Country Roads , with which John Denver was able to achieve great success; the latter song is the unofficial anthem of West Virginia .

In 1974 Danoff and Nivert formed the Starland Vocal Band along with singer Margot Chapman and piano player and singer Jon Carroll .

Their debut album Starland Vocal Band (1976) included the song Afternoon Delight , which stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in the US . The group was nominated for four Grammys and was successful in two categories: Best Arrangement for Voices and Best New Artist . The second album Rear View Mirror (1977) was comparatively unsuccessful.

The band members hosted the variety show The Starland Vocal Band Show in the summer of 1977 , which ran for six weeks on CBS . In addition to the then unknown David Letterman , Mark Russell, Jeff Altman and Proctor and Bergman appeared.

The group broke up in 1980 after they could no longer build on their previous success. Danoff and Nivert divorced shortly afterwards. Each of the band members started a solo career.

In the Simpsons episode In Honor of Murphy , Homer Simpson has a heart tattooed on his arm with the band's name.
