The park was created between 1822 and 1824 by order of the governor of the Congress of Poland, Prince Józef Zajączek . At that time it was at the western entrance to the city. The open space was created by the regulation of the Mleczna in the second half of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.

In 2003 Andrzej Wajda suggested that the city build an exhibition pavilion in the Stary Ogród to expand the contemporary art capacity of the Jacek Malczewski Museum . Wajda is an honorary citizen of the city where he lived from 1935 to 1946. The world-famous director and his wife Krystyna Zachwatowicz donated over 70 works to the collections in Radom. The City Council's Culture Council supported the idea. The voivodeship as the sponsor of the museum was also interested. Ten suggestions were drawn up for the location and Wajda's opinion was expected.

In January 2004, however, an idea was presented in the local Gazeta Wyborcza to adapt the construction of the former power station , built in 1900, for the purposes of the new art center. The idea met with great support, including Wajdas. The Mazowieckie Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej "Elektrownia" (MCSW "Elektrownia", Mazowia Center for Contemporary Art "Kraftwerk" ) project was implemented between 2011 and 2014 after an architectural competition .

The Stary Ogród was subjected to an extensive revitalization program by the end of 2014, along with the two other large parks in the city, Kościuszki Park and Leśniczówka Park . The avenues and the historic floor plan of the park were restored. New trees, shrubs and perennials were planted, which are watered with a newly developed system. Of the total amount of 19.7 million złoty of the measure , 4.9 million went to the Stary Ogród.

The park was placed under monument protection in 1983 and entered in the voivodeship's list of monuments under number 211 / A / 83.
