Staten Island Museum
The Staten Island Museum , also known as the Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences , is a museum on Staten Island , New York City , in the United States .
history
The Staten Island Museum was founded in 1881 and is the oldest cultural institution on Staten Island. It was founded by several local art collectors and natural historians , such as Nathaniel Lord Britton , who wanted to unite their private collections and make them accessible to the public. One of the ideas of the founding fathers was to draw attention to the environment and nature as well as their protection. Activities surrounding the oldest cultural institution gave rise to other institutions such as the New York Botanical Garden , whose first director was co-founder of the Staten Island Museum, Lord Britton. Today the institution sees its task in the documentation and exhibition of objects of natural history and local history with the background of public education and the enrichment of the cultural landscape. The exhibition is now divided into the three areas Natural Sciences , Fine Art and History Archives & Library .
