history

The station was commissioned as part of the Marina Line Architectural Design Competition jointly organized by the Land Transport Authority and the Singapore Institute of Architects . The selection process did not require a track record and is recognized by the industry as one of the best tenders in Singapore.

In 2009, the designers from WOHA Architects received the “Best Transport Building” award at the World Architecture Festival.

At the opening of the station on April 17, 2010, Transport Minister Raymond Lim, who led the opening, said: "The Circle Line will improve the quality of public transport - connecting homes, workplaces, and social and recreational areas faster and more seamlessly." He added in addition, the stations will connect commuters to the “doorsteps of important cultural destinations” such as the Esplanade and Fort Canning.

In 2011 the project also won the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Center for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Research, as well as other international architecture prizes. This station was featured as a video game in Hellgate: London when Windows Vista came together.

To let light into the station, a reflective water basin with panes of glass was created outside the Singapore Management University.
