Traffic jam assistants (also known as traffic jam assistants) are special employees of automobile clubs such as B. the ADAC or the AvD , equipped with white-yellow motorcycles (AvD: white-red) and a special permit, are allowed to drive in traffic jams through the middle lane or on the hard shoulder. They monitor traffic, provide information about traffic jams, their length and the cause, give advice on how to avoid traffic jams, advise on how to behave in traffic jams and tell road users how waiting in traffic jams can be made more bearable. They also provide information on how to properly secure people in the vehicle, especially children. In the event of an accident, they inform the police and rescue services of the exact location of the accident and the number of injuries. In an emergency, they provide first aid, secure the scene of the accident and pick up tools themselves or call colleagues from the road patrol.

Between 140 and 150 ADAC congestion advisors are on the German autobahn on Fridays and weekends from May to September. The two Bavarian regional associations (ADAC Südbayern and ADAC Nordbayern ), for example, have a total of 30 congestion advisors, e.g. T. permanently employed, in action. The ADAC Württemberg, the fifth largest regional association and largest in southwest Germany, sends eight advisers in traffic jams, the small ADAC Nordbaden employs seven helpers. There are other congestion advisors in some North German regional associations and in Austria ( ÖAMTC and ARBÖ ). The first operations began in the early 1980s.

The mostly voluntary helpers have been trained in special conflict management courses. They not only help to reduce stress, but also provide material help in traffic jams. For this they have emergency rations of soft drinks, snacks and small toys with them, which are provided by various sponsors depending on the national association. Help of this kind is distributed specifically and free of charge to ADAC members as well as non-members. For this reason, the Association of German Travel Journalists , VDRJ, awarded its Columbus Honorary Prize of 1987 at the ITB to the ADAC traffic advisors.
