history

The church was built from 1896 by the Rheims architect Alphonse Gosset (1835-1914) for 1400. anniversary of the baptism of King Clovis I built. This neo-Byzantine style building - shaped like a Greek cross and surmounted by a dome - is dedicated to Clovis' wife. The Chrodechild , venerated here under the name of Clotilde, is considered to be the origin of the conversion of the Frankish king to Catholic Christianity. The building is inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Church of St. Augustin in Paris. The church was elevated to a minor basilica in 1902 and completed in 1905.

This basilica was built on the initiative of Cardinal Benoît-Marie Langénieux , then Archbishop of Reims, and was to become the Basilica of Saints of France. To this end, he turned to all the dioceses that offered relics of the saints who had marked the history of France. These were deposited in the crypt, in which more than 120 reliquaries and more than two thousand relics are kept. Access to the basilica is severely restricted to a few days.

The Saint-Clotilde basilica was one of the places where the 1500th anniversary of Clovis' baptism was celebrated in 1996 in the presence of Pope John Paul II . On April 18, 2012, the basilica was damaged by a fire during roof repair work. The northern half-dome was almost completely destroyed, but the other parts of the monument and the relics kept in the crypt had not suffered. It reopened in 2015.
