The Stedelijk Museum Zwolle was a museum for art and cultural history in the Dutch city of Zwolle .

history

The museum was created in 1996 through the merger of the Provinciaal Overijssels Museum and Librije Hedendaagse Kunst . The collection included historical furnishings and utensils and an art collection with works from the Golden Age , including paintings by Hendrick ten Oever and Pieter van Noort . The Drostenhuis , a listed building in the city center from 1551, and a modern extension from 1997 served as the museum building . While the old building was mainly used for the presentation of historical collections, the new building housed various temporary exhibitions.

In 2017 the local council of Zwolle decided to close the museum. On October 16, 2017, there was a fire in the Drostenhuis that damaged the building and parts of the collection. The museum has been closed since then. The collections are to be taken over by the Overijssel Historical Center and transferred to the newly established Allemaal Zwolle Foundation . The collection is to be partially shown in temporary exhibitions, the Drostenhuis will show an exhibition on the city's history in the future.
