Hendrick ten Oever (born 1639 in Zwolle ; died 1716 there ) was a Dutch painter.

life and work

Hendrick ten Oever was born in Zwolle in 1639 as the son of David ten Oever and his wife Marijke, née Molkenbuer. The exact date of birth of Hendrick ten Oever is unknown; his baptism took place on April 11, 1639. His earliest known painting, the Portrait of Rabo Herman Schele, he created in 1657 at the age of about 18 years. This clearly shows the influence of the painter Eva van Marle . In 1659 he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a student of Cornelis de Bie and possibly Pieter de Hooch . From 1665 ten Oever lived again in Zwolle, where he lived in a house in the Sassenstraat. In 1675 he married Geertruidt van der Horst. From this marriage there were four children.

Hendrick ten Oever's work was influenced by Rembrandt van Rijn and Gerard ter Borch from Zwolle . This is particularly clear in his group portrait with preachers from Zwolle ( regents or Kerkeesters ) in the Sint-Michaëlskerk . In addition, a series of portraits and some landscape views are created. He died in Zwolle in 1716 and was buried on June 15 that year in the Sint-Michaëlskerk.
