Stefan Borgas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stefan Borgas (born September 11, 1964 ) is a German manager and CEO of RHI AG . Borgas is the father of four children.

Career

Stefan Borgas studied business administration at the Saarland University and the University of St. Gallen . He graduated with a Swiss licentiate Lic. Oec. (HSG).

From 1990 to 2004 Borgas held various positions at the chemical company BASF . During this time he lived in Europe, the USA and China. From 2002 as Vice President of the "Fine Chemicals" business unit

From 2004 to 2012, Borgas was CEO of Lonza AG. He was largely responsible for the realignment of the chemical company into a life science group. The strategic realignment was accompanied by a number of acquisitions in the feed / food and nutrition sectors. Including the takeover of Arch Chemicals, a company which at the time had 3,000 employees and had sales of around 1.2 billion dollars, for a purchase price of USD 1.4 billion. In January 2012 Lonza parted with Stefan Borgas after the net profit almost halved for 2011 and Borgas did not meet expectations. Borgas also brought the company, which was previously only listed in Switzerland, to the Shanghai Stock Exchange. After his departure as CEO of Lonza AG, Borga's severance payment sparked a public discussion about manager salaries, on which Stefan Borgas also took a public position. The public discussion was so heated that the Swiss daily week drew a comparison with the "Chinese cultural revolution, the witch hunt" and the "terror regime after the French revolution". The reason for the emotional charge was the ongoing election campaign for the federal popular initiative “1:12 - For fair wages”, which at that time was in the collecting phase.

From 2012 to 2016, Stefan Borgas was CEO of Israel Chemicals Ltd. (ICL). In Israel, where foreign business leaders are a rare exception, the appointment of a German as CEO and President of the country's second largest industrial company was a novelty. Under Borgas, the group went through major changes, such as marginal activities were disposed of and the food additives area expanded through acquisitions. In addition to the listing in Tel Aviv, a second one was achieved on the New York Stock Exchange. After it became known at the beginning of 2016 that Stefan Borgas was being discussed as the successor to the retired CEO of Syngenta, which was also confirmed by him, he said goodbye at the end of 2016 on the grounds that he wanted to return to Europe. His departure from ICL was accompanied by allegations of sexual harassment, which, according to Borga's own statement, was merely a kiss on the cheek of an employee on her last day at work.

Stefan Borgas has been Chairman of RHI AG since December 1, 2016 .

Stefan Borgas has been a member of Syngenta's Board of Directors since 2009. According to informed sources, Borgas brokered the takeover of Syngenta by ChemChina .

Positions

In the discussion about manager salaries, Borgas takes a clear position and says that a salary below CHF 1 million is "absolutely too low" and a wage of CHF 20 million too high.

Volunteering

From 2006 to 2013, Stefan Borgas was a board member of the Swiss Management Society (SMG), an association dedicated to the goal of leadership excellence in corporate development.

In November 2014, Borgas was elected to the board of the German-Israeli Chamber of Commerce and is also represented on the board of the International Fertilizer Association (IFA).
